Following our sell-out run of HMS Pinafore at Gosforth Civic Theatre last year, Gosforth Musical Society are proud to present Salad Days.
Salad Days was originally performed at the Bristol Old Vic in June 1954, written by Julian Slade and Dorothy Reynolds as an end of season summer show, and was schedules to run for just 3 weeks. An enterprising producer took the initiative to transfer the show to The Vaudeville Theatre in London’s West End in August 1954 where it ran for, at the time, a record breaking 2283 performances.
The show is a whimsical but hilarious fantasy, whose plot features a Magic Piano, that has the power when played to make any one who hears it, break into dance! Around this plot device is the story of Jane and Timothy, recently graduated from University, looking to gain gainful employment. The job they decide to take on a whim take, is to look after the Magic Piano at a salary of £7 per week. Various colourful characters weave in and out of the story including Timothy’s eccentric Uncles, 2 comic policemen, Jane’s mother and a mysterious Tramp.
The music is tuneful and infectious and you will be guaranteed to be humming several of the tunes after seeing the show.
